CITIZENSHIP APPLICATION
Who Can Apply?
You may be eligible to apply for Canadian citizenship if you meet the following requirements:
Permanent Resident Status: You must hold valid permanent resident status in Canada.
Physical Presence in Canada: You must have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days (three years) within the past five years.
Time spent in Canada as a temporary resident or protected person may count as half a day, up to a maximum of 365 days.
Time spent outside Canada while working as a Crown servant—or as the family member of a Crown servant—may also be counted.
Language Proficiency: Applicants between the ages of 18 and 54 must demonstrate proficiency in English or French.
Knowledge of Canada: Applicants aged 18 to 54 are required to pass a citizenship test that assesses knowledge of Canada’s history, values, institutions, and symbols.
Good Standing: Applicants must not be subject to any prohibitions, such as certain criminal convictions, that would make them ineligible for citizenship.
Steps to Becoming a Canadian Citizen
Confirm Your Eligibility: Review the requirements carefully, including physical presence, language ability, and knowledge criteria.
Submit Your Application: Complete the application, gather the required documentation, and pay the applicable fees.
Take the Citizenship Test (if required): Applicants aged 18 to 54 must demonstrate their knowledge of Canada by successfully passing the citizenship test.
Attend a Citizenship Ceremony: Finalize the process by taking the Oath of Citizenship at an official ceremony, where you will formally become a Canadian citizen.
Why Become a Canadian Citizen?
Canadian citizenship offers meaningful rights and responsibilities that go beyond permanent residency:
Participate in Canada’s Democracy: Citizens can vote in elections and run for public office, helping shape the country’s future.
Hold a Canadian Passport: Enjoy visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 187 destinations, expanded global work and study opportunities, and consular assistance while abroad.
Secure and Stable Status: Citizenship is permanent and does not carry residency obligations, unlike permanent residency.
Unrestricted Entry into Canada: Citizens have the guaranteed right to live, work, and travel in Canada without risk of losing their status.
Exclusive Career Opportunities: Certain government and high-security positions are open only to Canadian citizens.
Pass Citizenship to Future Generations: Canadian citizens can pass their status to children born abroad, a benefit not available to permanent residents.
